Val di Mello Italy: Off-the-Beaten-Path Alpine Escape

Val di Mello, Italy, is often nicknamed the “Yosemite of Italy” thanks to its dramatic granite cliffs, glacially carved valley, emerald pools, and huge boulders that resemble those found in California’s famous national park.

The rock is the same compact granite loved by climbers, with endless slabs and cracks, but here everything feels smaller, quieter, and more intimate – a kind of mini-Yosemite hidden gem in the Lombardy Alps.

Description of Val di Mello Italy

Val di Mello is located in the province of Sondrio, at the end of the Val Masino, a side valley of the Valtellina. Since 2009, it has been recognized as the largest protected natural area in Lombardy.

  • Landscape: The valley is famous for its powerful contrast between the lush, green valley floor and the towering, sheer granite rock faces that surround it. The valley is characterized by large boulders, coniferous forests, and the Mello River, which carves through the area.
  • Highlights: The river feeds several beautiful, clear pools and small lakes, including the picturesque Lago Qualido and the famed “Bidet della Contessa” (Countess's Bidet), known for its crystal-clear waters.
  • Geography: The valley starts near the village of San Martino and stretches towards the imposing mass of Mount Disgrazia (3,678 meters).
